the questions

  • do you take family portraits?
  • I'm often asked if I photograph families as well as children. The answer is, "of course!" but these are not traditional "sit together for long stretches of time and all smile politely at the camera" photos. Instead, I prefer to capture your family interacting--living and loving each other like you do every day. I adore relaxed, nontraditional captures of your family enjoying each other and firmly believe that portraits reflecting the spirit of your family will be the most treasured. If this is your goal as well, then we will get along splendidly. Many families enjoy choosing an activity that represents their day-to-day life and having that as the focus of at least part of the session--things such as the blowing bubbles in the backyard, the whole family hanging out on the bed and having a tickle fight or two, washing the dog, even going out for donuts or ice cream. The possibilities are limitless! Most of all, I'll just ask you to be you. The number one comment I hear as I leave (especially from dads) is "this was so easy!"
  • what about newborn sessions? how does that work?
  • Please call to commission your newborn session when you are expecting. Why? Because true newborn photos--when babies are all curled up and wonderfully sleepy--happen in the first two weeks of life. The ideal newborn "window" is between 5-7 days so, when you book your newborn session, I'll enter your due date into my calendar and squeeze you in when the baby arrives. The session itself, like all Joyce Smith Photography shoots, is relaxed and pressure-free whether at your home or our natural light studio in Wayne. We'll take plenty of time for nursing, diaper changes, etc. If you have not booked a session and your little one has just arrived, perhaps I can fit you in so give a call--I love newborn sessions!
